Week "Zero"

Week one or “zero” as it’s called in South Dakota was certainly eventful.

11A definitely had the most interesting of weeks with the top two teams – Milbank and West Central – losing. For now, it’s safe to say either Sisseton or Harrisburg is deserving of the top spot in the latest rankings. It’ll be interesting to see how things pan out this season, especially with Milbank and West Central set to play each other this week. There’s going to be (at the very least) a good team beginning the year 0-2.

In 11AA there really weren’t any surprises at the top. Washington and O’Gorman rolled and Roosevelt didn’t really have any major issues with Mitchell, though some may have been surprised with the Kernels final tally. I wish I could have seen the Pierre/Lincoln game to really get a feel for how each team looked. The Patriots came out with a narrow win. I was at the O’G/Aberdeen game on Saturday and it really wasn’t close. Aberdeen struggled to move the ball and didn’t look good at all in passing situations.

11B also saw some interesting games. Roncalli was considered one of the better teams in the class, but fell to Redfield/Doland on Friday night. Before the season, I heard good things about Redfield/Doland and for now, there seems to be reason to believe it. The other upset was Canton beating Tri-Valley. The Mustangs are certainly down this year, but I’m not sure a whole lot of people outside of Canton saw this coming.

Nothing really sticks out in the nine-man classes in terms of jarring wins/losses.

I actually spent my Friday in NW Iowa at a pair of Siouxland Conference games. First up was Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley vs. Hull Western Christian. HWC was dominant from the start. They wound up winning 18-2 in an ugly game. Either way, a nice start for them. The other game I watched was West Lyon vs. Central Lyon/George-Little Rock. West Lyon rolled. No surprise in that CLGLR is down again and West Lyon continues to produce talented teams year after year.

One final note, I’m going to try my best to start tweeting from the guys I’m covering…feel free to follow: @JimNelsonKSFY

The WC/Harrisburg game was one heck of a good game between two very good teams...it will be interesting to see how both fare the rest of the season...the Tigers look to have all the pieces this time around...including what appears to be a very good coach. Watching him on the sidelines, you would have never guessed it was his first game...very calm, cool and definitely in control.

This weeks rankings look fair. It's hard to say if Harrisburg is that good or if West Cent. is just very down. Basicly WC n Harrisburg played a tied game. Show's how important a kicking game can be. We'll be able to judge West Cent. better after Friday's game with Milbank.

Nice to see Redfield/Doland make the top 5 in 11B. They've came out of nowhere! Aberdeen Roncalli isn't the best team, but a good team and Redfield/Doland took it to them.

While the score would suggest a mere tie, I wouldnt say that the score did not reflect how much Harrisburg controlled the game...i'm sure if the stats from the game were posted, it would show a substantial yardage differential for Harrisburg...WC scored on each of the possessions in which it was even within striking distance...Harrisburg, however had a two TD opportunities negated by penalties...the first being in Q3 where they were deep in Trojan territory(inside the 10 or 15 I believe) and had a first down negated by a illegal man down field and the second a holding call in the backfield which called back a touchdown...both then ended on downs. It looks like the rest of the state's sportwriters disagree with KSFY/KWSN...either way, right now Sisseton and Harrisburg are probably 1-2 no matter which order.

Thank you for your explantion! That gives us some insight other than the final score. 1 or 2 doesn't seem to matter much. Sisseton has everyone back from last season. Harrisburg looks to be a solid as ever. As I've said, Fridays game between Milbank/WC will give us some insight into how good both WC & Milbank are as FB teams. Eitherway, one of these 2 team is going to be a very good 0-2 team.

I agree with the last comment. There will be a very good 0-2 team after West Central and Milbank play. The key is to do what Milbank did last year and get on a roll in the playoffs. These regular season games only get you into position.

If West Central and Milbank can learn from their losses they'll be a much better team in November.
