Looking Ahead

The first week is just a few days behind us and we're already looking ahead. I know many of our readers are South Dakotans, but at KSFY we cover parts of Iowa and Minnesota, which begins play on Thursday.

For people who really like good high school football, there is a great week one matchup in Adrian this Thursday night. The Dragons look to avenge last season's state championship game loss to Minneota at 7:00 p.m. Minneota looks to be very solid again this year, but has to replace its starting QB...which obviously is easier said that done.

In South Dakota, here are my games to watch:
Hanson vs. Avon - Could be the best game of the regular season.
West Central vs. Milbank - As many have said, this will leave a pretty good team 0-2 to start the season.
Best of the rest:
O'Gorman vs. Roosevelt
Dell Rapids vs. Canton
Lincoln vs. Washington
Tri-Valley vs. Harrisburg

I can feel the power shift moving from WC towards Harrisburg and the NE. Teams just don't fear WC like the used too. In years past teams had lost to WC before they took the field. Not so anymore. After losing to Sisseton in last seasons play off's and some very close games to Harrisburg and Bell F. Losing it's home opener to Harrisburg this season the fear factor seems to have been lost, Teams are now looking forward to playing WC knowing they have a good shot at winning. Milbank winning Fridays game wouuld not be consider such an upset.

Not so. Teams definitely still fear West Central. Is the total invincibility gone? Sure. But teams are still afraid of them. Who has had success against them in the past 5 years? Harrisburg, who ended the Championship run. Dell Rapids, who knocked them out on their way to winning it all in 2008. That's it. You have to BEAT West Central somehow - either by crazy upset or just outplaying them once - before you truly feel you can beat them every time.

That's why teams like Canton, Lennox, Milbank, Vermillion, and so on still get routinely handled by West Central even though they've all had good teams in the past. They may go in thinking "we can beat these guys," but once a couple breaks go West Central's way, you can feel the teams lose confidence as they think "here we go again." But the teams like Harrisburg, DR, and maybe now Sisseton come in thinking "we can beat these guys," and when a couple breaks go against them they still keep their heads up and think "that's alright, we've been here before."

I disagree! Teams like Harrisburg, Sisseton, Dell Rapids and Bell have played well against WC in the past. Harrisburg has played them very close in many games. Sisseton has played them close in a few and been blown out in a few also. Bell had them beat last season and Dells has won. I wouldn't say it's fear at all! I think everyone knows WC is a very beatible team. If you have a passing game, I'd go as far as saying you'll be the favorite.

WC is a great team! but lets face it! unless your STM, the fear factor is just not anywhere it used to be
