2010 Season Coming Soon...

The 2010 Pigskin Preview is being put together as we speak. We're in the process of writing articles, tweaking predictions and compiling lists. The first big decision was honoring seniors in our viewing area by putting them on the cover. This is no easy task. There are over a dozen seniors that we considered before finally deciding on these six deserving athletes. Derek Farniok is the biggest and most highly recruited of the bunch. Farniok is the starting offensive tackle for the Class 11AA champion Washington Warriors and will be playing for the Oklahoma Sooners this time next year. Matt Hermanson of Washington also is on the cover. Although Hermanson did a great job at quarterback for the state champs last year he is regarded as possibly the best defensive player in the area. Brendan Ter Wee is a three year starter for West Lyon at offensive line and defensive linebacker. Brendan helped lead the Wildcats to a 10-2 finish last season. Matt Lupkes of Dakota Valley was an all-state defensive back who almost single handedly led the underdog Dakota Valley team all the way to the semi-finals. He picked off seven passes last year and also got it done leading the offense. Christian Cox of Aberdeen Roncalli was named all-state as a quarterback and a kicker. Cox threw for over 1,400 yards in a traditionally run-oriented offense. Jordon Connor led Emery/Ethan to a championship game last season on the power of his legs. Connor rushed for 1,882 yards and earned all-state honors. There are plenty of other players who are elite talents who weren't on the cover but we wish to honor these six for their high character and great play on the field. Tell us who you would have put in your top six.

worst cover

Yea, no kidding!!!! Cox on the cover of mag?? I can think of 2 better QB's in the NEC alone, and 8 to 10 better all around FB players. Looks like KSFY just needed to fill in some gaps here or other kids didnt answer their phones.

Connor from EE is a great addition

I've seen Cox play, he's a good kicker and can throw the ball. Toelle from Sisseton and Mears from Milbank are good but Cox is better all-around player.

Carter Ahlers of flandreau or Tim jones of Flandreau, Christina Cox?!lol no way

I am trying to figure out how you left off Drew Kreutzfeldt from Chester. Best QB in 9 man FB and one of the best QBs in the state!

I've seen Cox play also. Mears has a title, Toelle has a win over WC and a state record. Cox might be a better over-all athlete, but he's nowhere close to a better QB than either of these two kids. NOT good enough to grace the cover of a FB mag.

Cox, a better QB....? NOT! Better kicker...? forsure!!! :) This season's cover is a let down to say the least! Prolly one of the worst covers ever! Good to luck to all the teams this season!

def not one of the better pigskin covers

how about Brandon Mohr? MVP Championship game, 3 year starter, already played in 3 state championships, 17 tds last year, Early committal to SDSU.

Brandon Mohr is definitely the best player not on the cover. He's a beast on defense.

Drew Kreutzfeldt is not the best QB in 9-man football. Cory Jacobsen from Viborg-Hurley is the best, and there's not even a close second.

I have seen cox play as well, with out the overall great supporting cast, the rest of those quaterbacks have, he did all right, and remember he put up some great numbers in an offense thats is fixed on running the ball up the middle, kudos to this kid

Go get them Cox

Cox had as good if not better supporting cast of any of the other better programs in the NEC. He's an ok QB, just not a great one. I think what everyone is saying is there is far better who could have been picked for a FB cover.

Maybe instead of saying who shouldn't have been on the cover you could include seniors you think should have made the cover and back it up with some specific stats. Some of you obviously don't have some of your stats correct!

Sure:

Milbanks Nick Mears
Sisseton's Toehle
Sisseton"s Toem

These are just three. Two QB's and WR. Two of them QB's and both in NEC.

Mears played 11A championship
Toehle broke records and huge win over WC.

I'll put up either of these two QB's & WR stat's on Cox any day of the week. Very simple. This is just 3 from the NEC, not the entire state. KSFY blew this cover!

The chubby kid next door might have been a better pick than a few on this seasons cover

Just a note that KSFY has never chosen a junior for the cover, that leaves out Mears. And I believe that Cox's performance would be as good as Toelle if he played in Sisseton where they throw the ball 50 times a game.

I stand corrected on Mears, lol. If there was ever a junior on that should have been on the cover, it should have been Mears this season. Cox is a good athlete,no doubt about it! But he's not at the level of Mears or Toehle. I've personaly seen all 3 play several games. Mears and Toehle are to close to say who's better, then there's Cox. Toehle imho has a much better supporting cast than either Cox or Mears. Cox has a much better leg than either Mears & Toehle. He's a much better kicker than a passer.

We've had our questions on the Cox saga answered tonight. A 28-14 loss to Redfield? Who should have been on the KSFY Cover you ask? Devin Tohm of Sisseton. The kid is a threat everytime he touches a football. 4 carries and 3 TD's! If teams are to play with this Sisseton team they'll need to contain him. Sisseton dismattled the defending champs in Milbank. Ksfy, you needed to go a little further Northeast of Aberdeen to find a great football player for your cover.

Well, since all of you are hating on Cox, don't forget last year that BEAT Toelle and Mears head to head. Cox was one game away from going to the dome and won 10 games last year. I've seen Cox play a few games and he has been the best player on the field in about every game. KSFY, I think you picked an EXCELLENT cover. No matter who you put on there, someone is going to be left out. I have no complaints about any of your cover choices.

I suspect the few games you "saw" might have been against Deuel, Britton, Clark-Willow Lake or Webster? I don't think bloggers are saying Cox is a bad QB? He's in the top 3 in the NEC, maybe top 10 to 20 in the State. What others are saying is he's not an elite QB. It showed with the loss to Redfield/Doland. Let's not forget that Roncalli's 1st & 2nd play-off games were against NEC foes Redfield and Britton. and one of the weakest regions in 2010. Britton came close to winning that game. Roncalli was also thrashed by 11B runner-up Tri-Valley in a game that wasn't even close. This year will be no different. Roncalli will benefit from a weaker than normal region. And the hype will end in the 2nd round. I have to wonder if KSFY was to do a do over, if we would still see Cox on their cover. Imho, I believe we would see the likes of Miller from Harrisburg, Toelle from Sisseton. Mears is no doubt on the cover next season! Being only a junior doesn’t qualify him this season? KSFY needs to take a look at changing that.

Wow, sounds like someone's a little jealous! I'm sure they did their homework. Go wine somewhere else!

Grading this seasons cover. Is it a C+ or C-?. Judging from the comments made on several blogs n website's, it appears to be more in line with D+. Being placed on a football mag cover is very cool, and lots of young men would love to say they did so, but, unless a player can live up to the hype, all you have is a picture and critics. South Dakota has lots of kids that could have been on that cover. Those kids are proving themselves on the field, not on some cover. Personaly, Ksfy could have done a better job doing their homework. In the end the only thing thats going to matter is who wins and who doesn't.

From what I understand, KSFY talks to college coaches to ask them who they are looking at and that determines alot of who is on the cover. That is probabley the most impartial judges you could have. Just saying.

To above:

That may be true! I can honestly only see one "true" college player on the cover. NOT saying none of the other kids aren't college bound. Maybe small time college.
